Split is just not a departure point to its nearby islands. Split is Croatia’s main ferry port and is also the country’s most promising city-break destination. Check out the top tips on what to see and do in Split, Croatia.
Diocletian’s Palace is one of the most magnificent Roman ruins present till date. Facing the harbor, you’ll love to spend most of your time while you’re in Split. You won’t get to see any museum or a huge palace, but this place is packed with bars, shops, restaurants and people. Originally built as a military fortress and a fortified imperial residence, the palace measures 180m from east to west and 215m from north to south. The marble used to build was imported from Greece and Italy along with columns and sphinxes from Egypt.
Considered as one of the best well-preserved ancient Roman buildings standing till today, this octagonal cathedral was built as a mausoleum for Diocletian who was the last famous persecutor of the Christians. A ticket for the cathedral includes admission to its treasury, crypt and baptistery. If you wish to view the town, you can get separate tickets for those who are eager to climb up the belfry to cherish the views over the old town’s rooftops. Don’t forget to check out the Cathedral crypt, a chamber which stays cool even on the hottest days in the year.
A short walk north of the town centre will take you to a beautiful museum which is a treasure trove of mosaic and classical sculpture. Majority of its vast collection is from the ancient Roman settlements of Split and neighboring Solin. Along with all this, there’s also some Greek pottery along with a vast display of jewellery and coins.
Set at the small peninsula which is northwest of the old toen, 178 m high marjan Hill is a popular local recreational spot very close to the city center. The place has been well known for rock-climbing, mountain-biking, walking and jogging. While you’re already there, don’t miss the opportunity to explore numerous small chapels and churches scattered throughout the area. There are a lot of beautiful sights to watch out for such as the unbelievable St Jerome Church.
Known for its beautiful waterfalls, Croatia is among the top when it comes to breath-taking waterfalls. Most people like to enter at Skradin, although the place has several other entrances from where you can tour by a boat or go hiking. There are several day tours available which will take you to magnificent places and then bring you back safely to Split to enjoy the rest of your stay.
Let’s not forget this! Split is actually located by the sea, so on a hot summer day, taking some time out to chill out at one of the town’s popular beaches would be a great idea. If you love water sports and stylish cafes, head to Bacvice Beach – the most popular and the only sandy beach in town. From there if you wish to explore more, go southeast and you’ll find other popular Split beaches like Znjan, Trstenik, Ovcice and Firule.
